O’NEILL DEFENDER Chest Zip 4/3
FEATURE RANGE: Entry Level
- Ultraflex DS Neoprene
- GBS SEAMS
- Chest Zip
- Supergrill Liner
- MeshSkin Chest & Back Panels
- Double Seal Collar
If you’ve worn O’Neill suits in the past you might be familiar with the Superfreak name, a suit we loved for its balance of price and features. This is where the Defender slots into the range and ditches the confusing “freak” name once and for all.
O’Neill Ultraflex DS Neoprene has a soft spongy feel and plenty of stretch so you are getting a very comfortable suit for this price range and a tried a true cut especially if you are broader in build. GBS seams are triple glued and a blind stitch preventing any water from wicking through to the inside of the suit. Taping is only present for reinforcement in critical stress areas.
The main selling point of this suit is the SUPER GRILL thermal liner. This hydrophobic lining combined with the channel like weave directs water away from the body core and thighs for extra warmth.
In summary a very good suit for the price and will suit surfers hitting the water on weekends.
The super grill lining covert the torso front and back and right down to your knees.

Xcel continue to keep innovating and one of the areas we have seen the most development is with inner linings. TDC – Thermo Dry Celliant is a smart textile with the ability to convert body heat into infrared energy and then redirect this energy back to your skin and muscle. This tech has been available in Xcel suits since 2015. The lining is available as a high pile or low pile and the Drylock X has combinations of High, Low and Hollow Fibre.
The STITCH FREE SEAMS give the greatest flexibility possible and are backed with Fusionx tape for strength and waterproofing.
The new waterproof zipper is a solid design with horizontal webbing at the base of the zip opening to prevent overstretching the suit during entry. This was a common cause of breakages on early model Chest Zip designs.
All round this suit just looks like it’s going to keep you super warm with neck, wrist and ankle seals to prevent flushing.

XCEL DRYLOCK HOODED VEST
Wetsuit hoods have certainly evolved since the chin strap caps of the 80’s. Nowadays the most popular styles are the full face hoods which give coverage to the front and back of the neck neck and help minimise the effects of flushing. Some models have a double flap, so one sits under the suit and one over the top, these provide the best protection from flushing.
This model from XCEL features an attached vest with the same Drylock Smartfiber Celliant tech which you see on their high end suits. This is a great vest/hood for anyone looking to beef up a base model suit that doesn’t have the high end liners.
The extra chin panel is going to make this more comfortable than most other full face hoods.
