I’ve been surfing 4-5 days a week sometimes twice a day for the last 36 years. I started riding modern Mals in the mid-80’s and have competed in many State and National Titles. In the 1998 National Titles Open 8ft division, Kane Tankard placed 2nd and I placed 5th. From this we concluded that our Mini Mals were as good as any other Manufacturer's in Australia.

Since February 2001 we started experimenting with our STUBBY’S. We have made boards from 6'2" to 9" long and from 2½". to 3¾" thick. After 18 months of R&D we felt we had something really special. The rails are slimmer and the boards are a lot sleeker than the early models. Because of the extra volume in the tail compared to a normal board they paddle as good as a board 6" to 1' longer and are looser and faster through the turns because of the twin concaves in the tail. I have ridden them in 6ft right and left handers and 1 – 2 ft slop. The more aggressively you surf them the better they go. You just have to make sure your back foot is on top of the fins. All our Team Riders and Staff have swapped their Mini Mals for the STUBBY.

If you feel your surfing is stale and lacking enjoyment because you are not catching enough waves then try one of our STUBBY’S and get ready for the best surf you’ve had in a long time or just ask someone who has one. I weigh 85 kilos and am riding a 6'6" x 2¾", 7' 6' x 3" , 8' x 3¼" in and 9' x 3½" These boards can be thickened up to suit any body weight.

Update: More Research and Development.

I surfed Crunchies on Friday 29th November swell was 2 – 4 ft with the odd larger set. I was riding my 7’6” x 3” Stubby which was performing particularly well. Another Guy had our yellow 7’6” x 3¼” demo board from the Point Leo store , we chatted in between waves he thought my board was going better than his so we swapped. There was very little difference but mine was definitely faster though the turns the extra ¼” and fuller rail was made for a 90 kilo plus person.

There was another Guy around 95 kilo’s who was struggling on his 7’6” X 2 3/8th Mini Mal. We swapped boards and now he was catching heaps of waves. He could not believe the difference in speed and maneuverability. His Board was very hard to paddle and rode reasonably well though the sucky sections but as soon as the wave flattened out it became very difficult to turn. With in 10 minutes both my elbows were aching, obviously caused by the extra pressure when paddling from the lack of buoyancy. The other incredible thing was duck diving, the board was easy enough to sink but was dead in the water. The Stubby is so much better, it is easy to sink and when the wave moves over you, the buoyancy can be felt thrusting you forward, sometimes rocketing you out of the water. Half an hour after swapping back my elbows had returned to normal. Since then I’ve spoken to a few other Stubby converts and all agree the extra buoyancy has eliminated many of their aches and pains, and they are not nearly as tired after 2-3 hour sessions.
