The first Open state round for the year was held at Gunnamatta on Sunday the 29th of January in solid 4-5 foot waves. A field of Victoria’s best 32 competitors surfed in the chunky right hand double-ups (and left hand runners out off the back bank).
Adam Morris recorded the best result for the local Peninsula guys with a 4th in the final. Whilst he didn’t have a great final, Adam was definitely one of the two biggest stand-outs on the day, scoring an epic 9.77 in his round one heat for a long, heavy left hand barrel towards the rocks. His semi-final win over last year’s winner Finn Barry, Cahill Bell-Warren and Lincoln Eather was particularly impressive, and was punctuated with another excellent scoring ride for a great snap and solid floater on one of the day’s biggest waves. It was Carl Wright from Phillip Island who won the final in the end, with Jack Perry and Cahill in 2nd and 3rd. Adam’s 4th place is his best result so far in the Open series.
Other Trigger Bros team riders Angus and Hayden Forrest were both unfortunately eliminated in Round 1, and Lachy McDonald was beaten in a close Quarter Final.
Thanks to Luke Chalmers who was on hand to take the photos of Angus in Round 1, and Adam in the final.
Congratulations to Ads on a great result – we hope to see him in the state team come year’s end.”
