This model was inspired by Kelly and Tomo’s collaboration in the Omni. Our shape combines the back half of our Reactor with a Shovel nose up front hence Nuclear Reactor abbreviated to “Nuke”. It’s a really exciting new board that looks very different yet hits a high on the Function Factors.

Back in the early 70’s, Side slippers ridden by Midget, Dennis Day from Strapper and Brother Phil (just to mention a few) featured shapes with a Duckbill nose. Our new model takes that concept even further with a fuller blunt nose not unlike that “lucky man” you see still riding his shooter with the nose snapped off.

That overused phrase your can ride this board 3 inches shorter has serious credibility with our Nuke . I have been able to drop down to 5ft 9 by 19 ½ by 2 ½ @ 29.5lt from my 6ft Lumberjack with the same volume. I am weighing in at 72kg (5 less on years passed) and feel super comfortable surfing this shape on anything in Westernport or up to 6ft Gunna.

My hands at point of entry when paddling are at least 6 inches in front of the tip and if you are a good observer you will notice most of the pro surfers paddle from way further forward than the rest of us. I think having your body more forward (supported by the extra nose area) definitely provides an easier glide into waves on take off but then also has the board accelerating faster into that first turn.

Above we have our 5ft 9 Nuke laid out on top of the 6ft 2 Reactor outline (both at 19.5 inches wide). The only point of difference is the 6 inches of nose flip which carries very little volume being both narrow and thin. When shaping, as soon as we saw off the excess blank in front of our shovel nose we add as much lift in the first 8 inches as possible. This way we have maintained the fundemental overall rocker line of a longer board while at the same time eliminating pearling (nose diving) on the shortened Nuke.

With the bottom shape we have set up a ⅛” concave with a double barrel that takes it to ¼” in either side of the stringer. The concaves fade out at the tail where we have just a light vee over the last 6 inches.

Over the years surfboard technology has come from flat or rolled bottoms (60’s) to directional vees (late 60’s to 80’s) then concaves for lift and speed on our new age low volume surfboards. The concave double barrel seems the perfect fit for the high performance all round surfboard capable in all wave situations.

The Nuke is set up as a thruster and with extra boxes to ride as a four fin, in fact our team Riders Hayden and Angus Forrest (designers of the Lumberjack) prefer the 4 fin set up on the 5ft 7 Demo. You really feel like you’re travelling at speed when you switch to the 4 but with the thrusters there is the ability to handle more power and surf more vertical.

Our Nuke is a very quick short board that paddles great and can still handle some size due to the sharp edged rounded pintail. It rides loose like a fish design but can be surfed shorter in length yet still more positive with less tail slide. Sizes are available up to 6ft 6 or you can customise to suit your specific needs.
