The Reactor: A design by Ian Cochrane Shaped by Triggs and Fordy

Our new high performance model evolved from Cocky’s passion for speed. It took 6 prototypes and plenty of surf’s from the gold coast to Lennox and Phillip Island to Bells before we were happy to put this new surfboard in the racks.

By trial and error we discovered that full length concaves to a depth of ½ an inch were simply too extreme and as one can imagine also tuff to paddle. Ian’s persistence paid off when we concentrated our single concave 18 to 24 inches up from the tail at a reduced depth of ¼ to 3/8 of an inch tapering out in both directions , dead flat right on the tail.

Concaves provide lift and water will travel nose to tail quicker as the rocker line is now flatter and reduced in length thru the concave section.

The Rail Line and tail still have plenty of curve ( not as much as Taj has but a good amount ) for manoeuvrability, while the rider standing over the concave system can generate more speed by driving the board from edge to edge ( Tick Tacking ). This is particularly noticeable on any down the line wave. Cocky believes there is a very positive link between the dynamics of skateboarding and surfing. The non stick bottom shape allows this surfboard to react like the old Gary Ablett fast twitch when wanting to engage the lip and even when your weight isn’t perfectly placed it comes back down sweetly.

The rails are very soft forward but not chunky and run super sharp from the fins back. He and I are riding 5ft 11 in by 18 ¾ by 2 3/8 with the tail shape a fullish rounded pintail. We are setting up the Reactor with a five box system so there’s multiple choices for varying wave sizes and conditions. Cocky’s preferring 4 fins while I’m hanging in on 3.

Demos are available thru our Leo store and standard sizes are set out below with customs recently shaped up at 5ft 6 and 7ft 2.
