Swell and weather on Sunday came in as predicted except for the stronger N-NNW wind. This caused the relocation of the event to the shelter of Little Noosa Point at Pines. This is probably a first for Supergroms but proved an inspired choice when we drove in to see clean 1-3’ peaks breaking left off the point into Pines bay. A hot day, hot waves and a beautiful sandy beach, what more could you ask for!
Given the late start it was a long day for everyone, and some tired souls dragged themselves home that afternoon. Our little left hander looked picture perfect but was in fact quite tricky with sucking sections causing both big wipeouts and spectacular rides. All surfers should be congratulated on having a real crack at it. Heats were close with count backs necessary to separate surfers. We saw some good surfing in all age groups but I think the standout was the U13 boy’s final that put the U15’s on notice with some long rides composed of well executed manoeuvres, (provoking cheers from the beach).
I thank all the parents who pitched in, you know who you are. We cannot run something this size without the effort of everyone including, the Strauss’s, Easton’s, Fallon’s, Everett’s, Triggs and everyone else who step up when something was needed. Also thanks to the judges and Trav, Jaime for water safety. Thanks also to the Groms for their patience and behaviour particularly when asked to move out of the contest area.
We had around 70 competitors register, about the same as last year. We have a break now as the next event is scheduled for 17/11 leaving Cup weekend free. So plenty of time to practice, keep surfing and watch your emails and the websites for notices.
