SKIMNEWS.Skim Contest #2 Announced
SKIMBOARDERS AGAINST ELEMENTS AT SEA FESTIVALCrowds gathered once again for the first comp of the much anticipated Frankston Skim Titles, held last Saturday, January 16th. The event saw out unfavourable conditions with high winds and an even higher tide, however it didn’t seize the competitors from showcasing amazing skills on rails and obstacles provided by Nemo Skimboards.
The Under 15’s division saw local Frankston skimboarder Harry West take victory, skimming well above his age group not to mention Tyler Wilford and Jackson White who impressed the crowd hitting some of the more advanced rails in the tricky conditions, placing second and third.
Nick Haynes from Baxter stood above the rest of the Under 18’s, landing big shuv its off the launch ramp with assistance from the strong wind claiming victory yet again this year. He was followed by Jake Wilford placing 2nd, who also stood out with speed and confidence throughout the day. CJ Hodgson, abandoned his family holiday in Nagambie travelling 3 hours to claim 3rd place going all out to make the U18’s a great final to watch.
Matt Peters took out the Open division once again dominating the course with big combos on a newly constructed A frame rail, with John Turville trailing close behind with some impressive maneuvers around the course, placing second and Shane Neighbour placing third.
This event provides and enormous opportunity for skimboarders locally and internationally to showcase their talent, ultimately progressing the sport within Australia. Events highlights include Shane Neighbour’s amazing headstands across the course, Jake Wilford's huge big spin over the launch ramp and 7 year old Michael Ralf from Canada who was half the size of his U15 colleagues skimming with confidence and determination in every heat. A huge crowd highlight was delivered with the use of Trigger Brothers Banshee Bungee, flinging Skimboarders across the course with speeds up to 50km/ph. Nemo Skimboards also awarded a brand new Skimboard to Travys Francis, Dylan Bailey, Dilan Basaran for their sensational sandcastle representing the course structure on the day.
All of this wouldn’t be possible without the push of the Victorian Skim Society, Frankston Youth Resource Centre and Fresh Entertainment who all volunteer their time to run these amazing events. A huge thanks goes to Trigger Brothers, Nemo Skimboards and Headspace Peninsula who provided great prizes and resources on the day, as well as all the staff who contribute to a successful event. .
