SNOWNEWS.'Cause there's one day in September
For over 20 years we've been heading up to Mount Hotham with the Bakers. A couple of Grand Final tickets had slipped through my fingers and a call from Pete inpired a last minute escape from Melbournes miserable outlook. Little did we know one of the biggest 2 day dumps was on the way. Saturday morning saw at least 1ft of fresh powder at Dinner Plain, so we set off in blizzard like weather and although only 3 lifts were running we found heaps of untracked snow with only a handful of riders.
Sunday the wind had abated and yes another 20cm of snow had fallen so up the Road Runner chair, followed by a hike to Heavenly Valley.
Pete ran the first lines down Canyon for the day while ski patroler Randy and I chose Race Gully. Looking back up from Slalom Gully I saw a group of locals including Garry Taylor and son Chad, they were going bananas busting down the steeps occasionally going over the handle bars in the thick soupy spots and coming up smiling.
What a weekend! And yeah I'm a Cat's fan with a soft spot for the Saints, I couldn't lose. Triggs |
