SKATENEWS.Chelsea Ramp
Chelsea Skateboarding has a special place in the heart of Trigger Bros. Not only was their first store located in Chelsea, but when the first ramp was built it was a daily ritual for then head shaper Garry Taylor to shape all day (wasn't he playing pinball? -ed) and then drop by on his way home. Original skate buyer for Trigger Bros Nigel Melder tore the ramp to shreds when I first moved down to Chelsea in 1989 and he and Garry were the local legends in my eyes.
The old ramp was in a bad state and was torn down at the start of last year. Over Xmas the new ramp finally went up (thanks to the Council, Village Committee and Darren at Convic Skateparks) and is 6 foot high with 8 foot extensions. It looks to be around 36 foot wide which is awesome. It is smooth as butter and a little more consequential than the mini ramps we are all used to skating as of late, this I think makes this ramp all the more fun. Apparently Nigel is back skating the ramp after a long time hiatus so lets hope next time your in the area Garry Taylor drops by to float those legendary Indy airs from the late 80's.
Located next to the existing concrete skate park (Bicentennial Park) 5 mins skate from the Chelsea station away from beach.
Thanks to old Chelsea Trigger Bros worker Shane for the story and pictures.
