Australian Titles 2013 by Phil Trigger
Mid September was the 2013 Australian Surfmasters in Port Macquarie NSW. Due to a healing hip it was the first in many years that I have not competed. Even though I wasn’t there two of our team riders Piper and Melissa Harrison were there to take it on and fly the Trigger Brothers Flag.
Melissa was surfing in Over 35 Women’s division and Piper surfing Open womens.
Port Macquarie as usual provided clean, contestable waves at North Haven for the duration of the event. Despite being only 12 years old and the youngest competitor ever to surf in an Australian Open womens Titles, Piper surfed consistently to progress through the event to the Semi finals. Unfortunately she was unable to get a second ‘keeper’ wave and progress but she did well achieving an Overall 7th and highest placed Victorian in the Open womens.

Inspired by this fantastic effort it was then Melissa’s turn to rise in the Masters Women. Melissa won her first round convincingly and in the second round final put the nail in the coffin putting the other competitors into Combo land in the first 8 minutes. Thriving in the small but clean conditions Melissa proceeded to take out the Australian Over 35 women’s national Title for 2013. In true form the Victorian team members carried her up the beach high on their shoulders celebrating the only Victorian National champion of the shortboard event.
I spoke to Melissa just after the event to congratulate her and she said that she was absolutely thrilled to have finally won a National title after chasing it for many events.
Piper and Melissa both wanted to Thank Phil, Paul and all the Trigger Brothers team for all their support and encouragement.
Thanks also to Simon Forward (Trigger Bros shaper) for shaping their great boards.
