Hayden Forrest and Trigger Bros Team

It’s a tough life being one of the country’s Hottest 100 Junior Surfers (#57 according to ASL’s 2011 poll)… Hayden Forrest has had a pretty good couple of weeks.

On February 11th in rubbish conditions at Gunnamatta, Hayden blew away his competition and recorded a pretty decent win in the open division at the Volcom VQS. He posted the highest single wave score, highest scoring manoeuvre (an 8.5 for a single air over a shallow 3ft section), and took the win in the final by over a point from local surfers Peter Watts and Jack Winter.

Other results from the Trigger Bros team included a 4th place for Piper Harrison in the girls division, and a 1st for Marlon Harrison in the Squid division.

The following weekend and Hayden and a bunch of guys from the Peninsula Surfriders Club were off to the Jim Beam National Surftag final at Lennox Head. (Note that team rider Adam Morris actually surfed the Phillip Island state round and flew up later). The boys surfer Snapper and D’Bah all weekend with the world’s best, and caught up with Lachy, Caiden and Adam on Monday morning for the drive down the coast.

It rained, the surf was small, and for a week the Peninsula Surfriders club team surfed small Lennox (in front of the pub). On Tuesday Lachy surfed the individual event (the Boardriders Cup) against 50 odd boardriders’ club champions from around Australia. He was narrowly beaten by pro surfers Jon Cummings and Matt Bembrose in the second round.

On the Wednesday Phil Trigger, Troy Wilkinson and Brett Fasso met up with the guys and watched the club’s team convincingly move through to the Quarter Finals of the National Final in decent weather and small two foot waves. Ex- Trigger Bros team rider Luke Fitcher surfed as the club’s over 30 and did a fantastic job to post both one of the heat’s highest scoring rides and also get in to secure bonus points by finishing on time.

More rain ensured the crowd was much smaller early on finals day morning – despite some strong scoring rides the boys finished fourth (10 points, 2 waves and 12 minutes away from finishing second) in their Quarter Final. The result is the best in Peninsula Surfriders Club’s history, and a testament to the group of local surfers charging up the rankings. Well done to Hayden and other team members Lachy, Adam Morris, Angus Forrest, Caiden Fowler, Liam Jolly, Mikey Barber, Ryan Chalmers, Luke Chalmers (thanks for the photos Luke), and Ronnie Gorringe – coach!

Just to complete the dream run… 3-4 foot Snapper on Friday night, and a great weekend of waves at home had everyone smiling – and those of us who don’t chase the surfing dream a little jealous. Goodluck for the pro junior series Hayden and well done on some good results of late!
