On Sunday the 28th September I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the morning show on 3RRR Community Radio, “Radio Marinara” which is a show that deals with all things marine and coastal.
The purpose of my visit was to promote the upcoming Pt Leo Surf Vintage Day. Well known host Dr Surf and marine zoologist Dr John Ford were at the microphone and made me feel more than welcome and relaxed as we began to prepare for the show. After some time in the green room we entered the studio for our segment, coordinator Cath Crick ensuring we kept to the schedule and prompted us around the intro and music tracks throughout the show. Dr surf and John kept things flowing with discussions ranging from current surf conditions to new marine parks around the world and of course the not to far away vintage day.
We discussed who’s idea the vintage day was and where it originate from. As you may or may not know Phil Trigger saw a similar concept on the gold coast during one of his many trips up north to Snapper and felt it was time we showcased some of our beautiful foreshore, surf breaks and of course classic surf craft memorabilia and history.
We briefly covered the original surf clubs in the area ie the Suicide Savages, Eastcoast Boardriders and the ever growing and strong PSC. Many of the Clubs characters were highlighted and some club antics drew a few raised eyebrows and laughs during the show. We also discussed what you will see on the day, which will be a fantastic array of vintage surf craft as well as surf music, the Kombi Klub original surf manufactures a vast number exhibitors all displaying their treasures and all forms of surf memorabilia.
We reiterated that this was not a commercial day and that it will be conducted in the spirit of surfing and a swap meet atmosphere with families most welcome to share what will be a fantastic day.
As we were pressed for time the show quickly drew to a close but I’m sure we got the message across to the quite large 3RRR audience. It was a real privilege to be invited into the bowels of the 3RRR studios and see how this long standing community radio station functions. I must say it is a real credit to to all the management staff and presenters who continuously donate their time to keep this very popular well oiled machine going. The mood and feel was smooth and this as you know is the way 3RRR comes to you over the airways.
For an old surfer, a young West Coaster, local Northcote boy and 3RRR tragic Adrian Daikin, this was a pretty unique and exciting day, one we won’t forget. By the way the Trigger Brothers/3RRR combo had to happen (see pics). They had no choice lol!
Our thanks go again to local Eastcoast/Westcoast guru Dr Surf who continues to bring us joy each month on Radio Marinara. Your support to the cause and the DSA is most appreciated.
Yours in Surfing
